Location & Description

Located at approximately the 14 mile mark of the Meramec River, a tributary of the Mississippi River, this alluvial deposit consists of about half sand and half gravel, is of glacial origin. Color ranges from light grey to buff to yellow and brown. The larger natural aggregate shape is rounded and smooth with some angularity but with out sharp edges. The sand aggregate has a large degree of angularity compared to that of the coarse aggregate, but the overall particle shape would be considered rounded. The natural sands that are produced from the Meramec River deposit are unique in regards to particle shape, uniformity and purity. When graded to meet industry specifications Meramec aggregates perform well in Portland cement mixes designed for roads, bridges, precast concrete and buildings or wherever a high-quality concrete is needed.

This hard durable mineral is ranked at a No.7 on MOHS scale of hardness. (Talc ranks No.1 and Diamond ranks a No.10)

Mining

The sand and gravel is extracted from the deposit by means of hydraulic suction dredge, loaded into barges and transported to the sorting plant by tow boats.

Processing

The main screening process produces six different sizes of coarse aggregates and three sizes of sand products. Once the sizing of aggregate is complete the material is transported by conveyor belts to stockpiles for customer use or for further processing at one of the company's three secondary plants. Secondary processing includes crushing of the larger aggregates and also specialty screening to produce gap graded gravel and sand. All of the products produced at this site are monitored by Winter Brothers technicians in the company's M.O.D.O.T. and I.D.O.T. certified laboratory.
